A Mandate

The Popular Vote:
The GOP: 56,088,419
The Democrats: 63,432,250

It is finished. And it has begun. I think it's time for us to remember now that we all want the same things. We might disagree with each other on how to reach our goals, but we can only reach them together. We have to respect our differences if we are going to find a way past them. Race is not a blunt weapon; neither is religion; nor is abortion.

We should all want all of us to do well. If, individually, we are doing well, but people on the streets of our cities are homeless, or working two jobs to try to raise children alone, or denied access to adequate healthcare or education, then we are not doing as well as we think. We need to acknowledge this, and then make changes.

When some of us suffer, we all suffer.

This is not Socialism.

This is kindness.

What an emotional day the election was! I expect most people, especially those made ecstatic by the historic selection, are feeling fatigued today. I thought that I would wake up this morning and soar for another 24-48 hours on adrenaline, but it hit me very early in the morning that now the real work begins. The true long-term measure of President Barack Obama will be his ability to maneuver politically. Translating his campaign platform into successful legislation will be a real challenge. I am especially buoyed by the prospect of so many hopeful and talented people heading to Washington.

Damn straight. I am hopeful for a new attitude in America, one of concern for others, rather than I'm alright Jack. Optimism rather than cynicism, action rather than inaction. After all we are all in this together. It is our country, not mine or yours.
